Visitors from the outside community are a refreshing break from the routine for seniors in longterm care facilities. During arts classes, community visitors bring smiles to the seniors’ faces by sitting alongside them to make art, listen to their stories, offer encouraging feedback, and assist as needed.

We hire local professional artists to lead arts classes for our Senior Smiles program. Selected artist instructors are supported with training and class assistance to ensure instruction is accessible and adaptable for senior participants.

When and where are the classes held?
We partner with long-term senior care and assisted living facilities in the Austin area. Class times vary, depending on the needs of our partners, but are typically held on weekdays between 1p and 4p or weekends between 10am and noon. We’ll let you know the options for upcoming locations and dates after we receive your volunteer application.
Will I need a background check?
Yes. Most of our partners require volunteers to undergo a background check before working with the seniors.

Can I receive documentation of volunteer hours?
Yes, if you need to submit volunteer hours for an organization or school project, we can provide documentation after the class. Let us know that you’d like the hours to be tracked and documented. On average, volunteers contribute 2-3 hours per class.
I'm a minor. Can I volunteer?
Absolutely! Minors ages six and above can attend arts classes under the direct supervision of a parent volunteer. Minors age 16 and above can volunteer on their own with parent permission. Fill out the volunteer application above and we’ll be in touch with more details.
